WHAT IS THE ESCAMBIA COUNTY MEDICAL SOCIETY?
The Escambia County Medical Society [ECMS] is a local professional association of medical doctors and doctors of osteopathy (MDs & DOs), that addresses political, social and economic issues concerning the level and delivery of healthcare for patients and physicians. Started in 1873, the non-profit ECMS represents approximately 300+ physicians living or working in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties of Northwest Florida. The ECMS supports the Florida Medical Association (FMA) and the American Medical Association (AMA).
The staff of the business office fulfills the instructions of its board of directors to communicate, organize and facilitate the organization of quality healthcare and related issues for this area. Through the efforts of organized medicine, the goal is that all citizens of our community will enjoy quality healthcare. Contact the board of directors through the ECMS office, by calling 850-478-0706 or by email.
Important goals for this membership organization is to function as the champions of healthcare, by:
- Nurturing all physicians to seek self-improvement, leadership abilities and volunteer opportunities within our community and state
- Serving as advocates for patients by encouraging physicians to pursue high standards in medical care, education and ethics
- Promoting access to quality healthcare for all citizens in the local community, regardless of ability to pay for such services
- Being a referral agency to the public for the easy location of reputable, legally qualified Doctors of Medicine or Osteopathy in the Escambia & Santa Rosa County areas
- Promoting the unity, harmony and welfare of the medical profession
- Supporting the Florida Medical Association (www.fmaonline.org) and the American Medical Association (www.ama-assn.org)
Some of our activities through this non-profit organization:
- Offer membership to all qualified physicians in our area
- Encourage continuing medical education and accreditation
- Liaison with public health agencies
- Physician meetings featuring current topics concerning healthcare
- Communicate information through our newsletter, The Bulletin
- Actively seek the legislative process to improve availability of quality healthcare for all citizens, regardless of ability to pay
- Respect and facilitate the coordination of physician-specialty society efforts
- Maintain honest communication with the media
- Encourage members to volunteer in our community
Helping the Community:
- Physician referral and information service to the public
- Sponsorship of the "WE CARE" Program offering free medical specialty care to those in need. In 2007 approximately $3.9 million of free care was given to indigent patients in our community, provided by Baptist Health Care, Sacred Heart Health System and West Florida Healthcare and the approximate 160 physicians who volunteered as providers.
- New Signature Project called ElderCare (see FOUNDATION)
- Through the ECMS Foundation, provision of short term medications for WE CARE patients
- Support of new medically-based projects that seek to improve the quality of life for all citizens
